George Washington Carver was born into slavery, but became a prominent educator, botanist, agronomist, 'cookstove chemist', artist and humanitarian. He has inspired generations of young African Americans. He helped the region break away from colonial status through his work to encourage farmers away from cotton to soybeans and peanuts.
