History Details For - Battle of Long Island8/26/1776After the British fled from Boston, George Washington anticipated that their next move would be to make a move against New York City, so he moved his army to New York. Between August 22 and 25, the British landed 20000 troops onto the southwestern corner of Long Island (in todays Brooklyn). On the 26th, General Howe (the British commander) launched his attack. The Americans were driven back and were finally able to reach their defenses on Brooklyn Heights, suffering 1500 casualties (200 killed, the British lost about 400).
The British decided not to attack the American defences, but decided to lay siege instead. ON the night of August 29th, Washington withdrew his men over to Manhattan Island. Links:
