History Details For - Danbury4/26/1777New England had a large supply magazine in Danbury CT during the winter of 1776-1777. During the spring of 1777, the British under Sir William Howe sent a force from New York to destroy this magazine. General William Tryon, the governor of New York (as well as a general) took Danbury and marched into town and burned the storehouses on April 26th with 2000 men.
From New Haven, General Benedict Arnold raised 700 militia and marched on the British force. The militia harassed the British forces, but were not able to defeat the raiding British. The British were able to leave Connecticut on April 28th near Norwalk. Links:
