History Details For - Kettle Creek

2/14/1779
Early in 1779 when the British took over most of Georgia, very heavy and blooky battles for the center of the state began. On January 29, the British occupied Augusta GA. Colonel Boyd of North Carolina led 700 tories to join the British forces stationed there. On the way to Georgia, Colonel Boyd's men plundered the outlying farms and towns throughout South Carolina. A patriot force of 300 militia under the command of Colonel Andrew Pickens went after Boyd..

On February 14th Pickens attacked the tory encampment from all sides, taking them completely by surprise. The militia killed 40 including Colonel Boyd and captured 75 of the tories. 5 of these prisoners were later hanged. 300 of the Tories eventually made it to Augusta, the rest just went home. The Americans under Pickens lost 9 kileed and 23 wounded.
